ADI is a nodular graphite cast-iron (ductile cast iron) applied with austempering.  Cast iron is the low cost also flexible to design shape.  To austemper that cast iron to gain the same strength level as thermal refining steel.  Austempering is a treatment to immerse into mudium salt and cooling for a certain amount of time after heated.
