What is NAGATO’s heat treatment? - A procedure to complete a part -

Simply put, heat treatment is the process of adding heat then cooling down to change the metallographic structure of a metal thus creating hardness, toughness and fatigue strength in the product, that’s right, a swordsmith ‘hardens’ a sword, that’s heat treatment.

Where forging/casting and machining are about the shape and dimensional changes of a product, the feature of heat treatment is to make quality changes.

Our role at NAGATO is to give each part and product ‘added value’ and ‘characteristics through the appropriate heat treatment method based on our customers’ requests and improve its value.
On top of that, all processes can be provided and suggested at NAGATO from the heat treatment all the way to machining work, so this is why we are called ‘A department store for heat treatment’.

A material that has been ‘casted’ and ‘forged’ and basically ‘melted and hardened into shape’ then ‘hammered at high temperature’ at a customer’s arrived in our factory,
At this point, the shape didn't look like a part at all, however, these materials will become parts of cars, building machines and working machines eventually and delivered to our customers.

For those precious materials such as parts for machines, before shaping we apply a material heat treatment.
Material heat treatment is a process of ‘normalizing’ and ‘hardening and tempering’ so the metal structure and the hardness will be adjusted.
Put simply, material heat treatment is a process to release stress from the previous process and make it healthy.

The materials applied with material heat treatment will be processed and made closer in shape to the products with a variety of processes such as lathe processing, milling, drilling, grooving and so on.

We perform a lot of heat treatments on products that were given material heat treatment and machining operations previously.
For heat treatment, the appearance of the product will not change that much, but the surface color does change.
However, in this process, the metal's surface hardness and strength will be upgraded.
Basically, added value of the product will be improved through the heat treatment.
That means heat treatment is a process to change ‘quality’ and not the ‘shape’ of the metal.

For the finishing process, a grinding operation will be applied and adjust the dimension of the product.
External grinding, internal grinding and flat surface grinding will be conducted.

 

Inspection

Inspection

Every time each process is completed, inspect if it became the product in the specification from a plan view and check the quality of the final product.
The part’s dimension and shape in the treatment process and the hardness and metallographic structure in the heat treatment are mainly inspected.
Because the effects of heat treatment are not visible an inspection needs to be done properly.
Only the products that pass the inspection of each process can be sent to the next process. (if the material heat treatment’s quality is no good, then it could influence the final product.)

Products that pass all the inspections will be aligned, put in a box and packed. (Generally, a rust inhibitor will be coated on.)
Then, the products will be dispatched and delivered before the requested due day.
